34th-seeded ’83-’84 Nordiques Take 3-0 Series Lead, but 31st-seeded ’06-’07 Predators Comeback to Win in Seven Games

The 34th-seeded ’83-’84 Quebec Nordiques took the first three games of this series fairly easily, outscoring the 31st-seeded ’06-’07 Nashville Predators 16-7. Then, in Game 4, the ’83-’84 Nordiques led 2-0 just three and a half minutes into the game, but the ’06-’07 Predators responded with five unanswered goals to win 5-2. They then staged third period comebacks in both Game’s 5 and 6 to force a Game 7 that they hang on late to win Game 7 5-3 to complete the comeback. The ’06-’07 Preds become the seventh team in UNP history to complete a 3-0 series comeback.

This was an incredibly even series as the two teams both scored 29 goals over the course of the seven games. The Nordiques averaged 37.6 shots on goal per game while the Preds were not too far away with 34.7 per game. There was a lot of penalties between the two teams as they combined for 107 penalties in minutes. Quebec went 3-for-15 (20.0%) on the PP while Nashville was just 1-for-18 (5.6%).

The Predators’ offense was very balanced, with 13 different players scoring, but no player scoring more than four times. David Legwand and Paul Kariya both slotted home four goals while there was a three-way tie for second that included captain/defenseman Kimmo Timonen. Kariya and Legwand were also first and second on the team in assists with 10 and 9, respectively. Naturally, Kariya and Legwand were the team’s leaders in overall scoring with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Their linemate, Steve Sullivan, was third behind them with 8 points (3G, 5A). The rambunctious Scott Hartnell had the honor of being the only player in the series to be ejected as he got the boot for an elbowing in Game 5. Goaltending was an issue early on for Nashville. Tomas Vokoun started the first two games of the series, but was replaced as the starter by Chris Mason for the rest of the series. In his two starts, Vokoun posted a 3.33 goals against average and a .872 save percentage while Mason posted a 2.71 goals against average and a .897 save percentage.

The Nordiques had some good performances in this series. Michel Goulet was the team’s leading goal-scorer and leading overall scorer with seven goals and 15 points, which was a series high. The fiesty Dale Hunter also scored seven goals in the series to tie Goulet for the team lead while defenseman Mario Marois was second with four goals. However, Marois did lead the team in helpers with nine while Goulet was a close second with eight. Marois was also second in overall scoring with 13 points while Hunter was the third and final Nordique to reach double digits in points with 10. Goulet also posted a series-high plus/minus rating of +8. Unlike Nashville, Quebec was able to stick with their starter for all seven games. Dan Bouchard was pulled twice in the series, but did start all seven. He posted a 3-4-0 record to go along with a 4.00 goals against average and a .872 save percentage.

The Predators have enjoyed a nice amount of success in the UNP and the ’06-’07 Predators have made it out of the First Round in both of their appearances. The furthest the franchise has made it was the Third Round in the inaugural UNP, but that was not the ’06-’07 Preds. They will face the 2nd-seeded ’47-’48 Toronto Maple Leafs in the Second Round. The ’83-’84 Nordiques were making their second trip to the UNP and they were unable to match their first trip where they made it out of the First Round. That was in the inaugural UNP and it is still the Nordiques’ only UNP series win.

Next up in the First Round, the 20th-seeded ’08-’09 Carolina Hurricanes take on the 45th-seeded ’76-’77 Cleveland Barons!
