This wasn’t close. However, Game 2 did go to overtime, somehow.

The 25th-seeded ’09-’10 San Jose Sharks’ offense was dominant in this series. They scored 31 times over the four games for a 7.75 goals per game average, which is tied for a tournament high. Big Joe Thornton was the leading goal-scorer in the series with nine, which included a six-goal game in Game 3. Dany Heatley was second in goals behind Thornton with six goals. Defenseman Dan Boyle was the team’s leading playmaker with 11 helpers in the series while Patrick Marleau was second behind him with nine. Big Joe finished as the team’s overall leading scorer with 15 points while Boyle and Heatley were tied for second with 13. Marleau was the fourth Shark to reach double digit points as he totaled 12 points. Ryane Clowe was the fifth Shark to average more than a point-per-game with his six points over the four games. Big Joe also posted the highest plus/minus for San Jose at +14 while Boyle was a close second at +13. In goal, Evgeni Nabokov didn’t have much to do at times. He went 4-0-0 with a 2.50 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.

Let’s just get through this. Wilf Paiement was the leading goal-scorer and overall scorer for the 40th-seeded ’77-’78 Colorado Rockies. He posted three goals, all of which came in Game 1, and six points. Defenseman Barry Beck and Paul Gardner were tied for second on the team in points with four each. Behind Paiement, no player for the Rockies scored more than once while Paiement was tied for the team lead in assists with three with beck and Gardner. Again, besides those three, no Rockie posted more than one assist. Skipping plus/minus, for obvious reasons. Goaltender Doug Favell started all four games for Colorado, but he was pulled three times in the series in favor of backup Michel Plasse. Neither of them faired well. Favell posted an 0-3-1 record with a 4.75 goals against average and an .886 save percentage while Plasse had no decisions and posted a 4.00 goals against average and a .860 save percentage.

The ’09-’10 Sharks have dominated their First Round matchups in their three UNP appearances now. The farthest they have gone is the Third Round in the Second Annual UNP. Now, they will have a difficult matchup in the Second Round as they’ll face the 8th-seeded ’92-’93 Pittsburgh Penguins. They will face the 2nd-seeded ’47-’48 Toronto Maple Leafs in the Second Round. The ’77-’78 Rockies are now 0-for-2 in their two UNP appearances and Colorado’s first franchise, as a whole, is now 0-for-3.

Next up in the First Round, the 22nd-seeded ’09-’10 Vancouver Canucks take on the 43rd-seeded ’25-’26 Pittsburgh Pirates!
