The first two games of this series featured two-goal margins of victory, one for each team. After that, each game was decided in overtime. The 36th-seeded ’08-’09 Columbus Blue Jackets forced OT in Game 3 with a goal late in the third period. Then, Manny Malhotra scored the OT winner to give them a 2-1 series lead. It was almost the same exact story in Game 4 as Columbus forced an OT late in regulation. However, this time it was defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson that tied the series at two for the 29th-seeded ’11-’12 Phoenix Coyotes. Both Game’s 5 and 6 didn’t feature a goal in the third period, but most importantly, it was Radim Vrbata that scored the OT winners in each game to seal the series for Phoenix.

For the Yotes, it’s about their play in the defensive zone and getting good goaltending, but they had a very balanced offense in this series. Captain Shane Doan led them in overall scoring with eight points while there was a three-way tie for second with six points between Ekman-Larsson and forwards Antoine Vermette and Ray Whitney. Doan was also Phoenix’s leading goal-scorer with four goals while Vrbata and Whitney were tied for second with three. 10 different players scored for the Yotes while 16 different players registered at least a point. Ekman-Larsson and Vermette were Phoenix’s top playmakers with five assists each while Doan was second with four. Doan and Vermette also posted the team’s highest plus/minus rating of +6 along with Lauri Korpikoski. Ekman-Larsson was tied with his defensive partner, Keith Yandle, for second at +5. Goaltender Mike Smith was the best player for Phoenix as he has to be if they wanna win. He posted a 4-1-1 record with a 2.67 goals against average and a .937 save percentage, both among tournament leaders so far.

For Columbus, they couldn’t match the scoring depth that Phoenix brought. Most of their offense came from their top line of Rick NashR.J. UmbergerJakub Voracek. Nash finished with 11 points to finish first on the team while Umberger’s eight points were good for second. Voracek was in third with six points. Nash and Umberger both scored five goals to lead the team in goal-scoring, but Maholtra was the only other Blue Jacket to score more than once. Nash also finished as the team’s playmaker with six assists while Voracek was second with five helpers. Naturally, Nash and Umberger finished with the team’s highest plus/minus ratings at +4. There was a three-way tie for second at +3 between defensemen Mike Commodore and Marc Methot and forward Jason Williams. Goaltender Steve Mason went toe-to-toe with Smith in this series and was just barely edged out. He finished with a 2-1-3 record with a 2.83 goals against average and a .928 save percentage.

The ’11-’12 Coyotes have represented the now Arizona Coyotes in all three UNP’s and are moving on for the first time in franchise history. They will have a whole new type of opposition in the Second Round as they will face the 4th-seeded ’70-’71 Boston Bruins, who are making their UNP debut. For the first time in the franchises history, Columbus will not be advancing from the First Round. The ’08-’09 Blue Jackets fall to the same team that the ’13-’14 Blue Jackets defeated in the First Round of the Second Annual UNP.

Next up in the First Round, the 18th-seeded ’14-’15 Tampa Bay Lightning take on the 47th-seeded ’34-’35 St. Louis Eagles!
