18th-seeded ’14-’15 Lightning Sweep 47th-seeded ’34-’35 Eagles Despite Poor Finishing

Yeah it was a sweep, but I was expecting the '14-'15 Lightning to really blow the doors off the '34-'35 Eagles, which didn't happen. (via tbo.com)

The 47th-seeded ’34-’35 St. Louis Eagles were able to slow down the 18th-seeded ’14-’15 Tampa Bay Lightning, despite getting swept. Mostly because of goaltender Bill Beveridge who averaged almost 50 saves a game.

The ’14-’15 Lightning really peppered Beveridge and the ’34-’35 Eagles in this series. They averaged over 50 shots on goal per game, but only averaged four goals per game. Captain Steven Stamkos led the team in overall scoring with eight points while Tyler Johnson was right behind him for second with seven points. Stammer also led Tampa in goal-scoring with five goals over the four games, including a hat trick in Game 4, while Nikita Kucherov was second with four goals. There was a four-way tie for the team lead in assists at four between Johnson, Ondrej Palat and defensemen Victor Hedman and Anton Stralman. Stammer was alone in second in helpers with three. In goal, Ben Bishop wasn’t very busy at times, but stopped plenty of shots. He posted a 4-0-0 record with a 2.00 goals against average and a .941 save percentage.

The Eagles were only able to average two goals a game offensively and no player scored more than two goals. Defenseman Ralph Bowman and forwards Glenn Brydson and Syd Howe were those three players who scored twice to lead the team. Defensemen Vern Ayres and Irv Frew were the only other players to score, both scored just once, obviously. Brydson was also the team’s top playmaker with three assists while Joe Lamb was second with three. Brydson finished with five points to lead St. Louis in overall scoring while Howe was second with three total points. Already brought up how Beveridge was able to keep these games close. His numbers don’t look all that great because eventually the Lightning were able to break through. He posted an 0-4-0 record with a 3.75 goals against average and a .929 save percentage.

The ’14-’15 Lightning are the third different team to represent the franchise in the UNP and all three have now advanced from the First Round. This sets up a very intriguing matchup in the Second Round as the ’14-’15 Lightning will take on the 15th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche. The ’34-’35 Eagles continue to look for their first UNP series win, which will most likely never come.

Next up in the First Round, the 28th-seeded ’72-’73 Minnesota North Stars take on the 37th-seeded ’08-’09 Atlanta Thrashers!
