The seventh sweep of the Ultimate NHL Playoff First Round so far, out of 11 series’. Par for the course, really.

Wayne Babych led the 21st-seeded ’80-’81 St. Louis Blues offensively this series with 12 points. Mike Zuke was behind him with a total of eight points. Babych also led St. Louis in goal-scoring with seven goals, two of which were game-winners, while Hockey Hall of Famer Bernie Federko was second with five goals, which included a first period hat trick in Game 3. Zuke also pitched in with four goals to round out the three Blues who averaged at least a goal per game. Defensemen Joe Micheletti and Rick Lapointe were tied for the team lead in assists with six while Babych was tied with Blake Dunlop for second with five helpers. Goaltender Mike Liut was a little busier on average than the other goalies whose teams swept their First Round opponents. He faced a little over 35 shots against per game. Liut posted a 4-0-0 record with a 2.25 goals against average and a .936 save percentage. He closed out the series with a 31-save shutout performance in Game 4.

One thing the 44th-seeded ’74-’75 Kansas City Scouts can hang their hats on after this series is that they were better on special teams than the Blues. Their PP went 3-for-13, which was a 23.1%, while they’re PL went 8-for-10, which, of course, is 80.0%. Defenseman Jean-Guy Lagace was the team’s top scorer with four points, all four of which were assists, which were also a team-high. There was a three-way tie for second in overall scoring with three points between Guy Charron, Dave Hudson and Simon Nolet. Hudson was the team’s leading goal-scorer with three goals while Charron was second with two. They were the only two Scouts to score more than once. There was also a three-way tie for second on the team in helpers at two between Nolet and defensemen Larry Giroux and Brent Hughes. Kansas City made a goalie change after Game 2 as regular starter Peter McDuffe was replaced by Denis Herron. It didn’t make much of a change. Herron posted a 0-3-0 record, one loss came in relief, with a 3.00 goals against average and a .914 save percentage while McDuffe posted a 0-1-0 record with a 3.50 goals against average and a .833 save percentage. Both goalies appeared in all four games.

The ’80-’81 Blues are the third different team to represent the franchise, but are now the the third Blues team to make it out of the First Round. However, the franchise has failed to make it out of the Second Round. The ’80-’81 Blues will have an interesting matchup in the Second Round as they will face the 12th-seeded ’84-’85 Philadelphia Flyers, who are also making their UNP debut. After making it to their third straight UNP, the ’74-’75 Scouts remain looking for their first UNP win.

Next up in the First Round, the 32nd-seeded ’84-’85 Winnipeg Jets and the 33rd-seeded ’37-’38 New York Americans!
