This series was about as close as a five-game series can be. The 30th-seeded ’85-’86 Hartford Whalers average 44.6 shots per game while the 35th-seeded ’14-’15 Minnesota Wild averaged 42.4 shots per game. However, the Whalers were able to capitalize more on their chances, averaging 4.60 goals per game while the Wild averaged only 3.20 goals per game.

It was basically a two-man show for the Whalers in this series. Captain and Hall of Famer Ron Francis led them in scoring with 11 points over the five games. He also led them in goals, surprisingly, with seven goals. John Anderson was second in both goals and points behind Francis with six and 10, respectively. Anderson’s points came in bunches though with four points in Game’s 1 and 5, including a hat trick in Game 5. Defensemen Dave Babych and Joel Quenneville were tied for the team lead in assists with five helpers. There was a three-way tie for second in assists at four between Anderson, Francis and Kevin Dineen. Ray Neufeld was only able to pitch in for three goals during the series, but two of them turned out to be game-winners. The most important game-winner, though, came in Game 5 in overtime when Sylvain Turgeon scored just his third goal of the series at the 12:50 mark to win the series. Mike Liut was in goal for the Whalers in the series, wasn’t spectacular, wasn’t bad. He finished with a 4-1-0 record with a 3.20 goals against average and a .925 save percentage.

Like I said before, this wasn’t exactly a bad performance from the Wild. Offensively, they were led by Nino Niederreiter, of all people. He finished with eight points over the course of the five games while he was followed up by Mikko Koivu with seven and Zach Parise with six. Niederreiter was also the team’s leading goal scorer with five while Parise was second behind him with three. Only two other players for Minnesota scored more than one goal, however, as Koivu and Thomas Vanek scored twice. Koivu did lead the Wild in assists with five helpers while there was a five-way tie for second with three assists, which included both Niederreiter and Parise and defensemen Marco Scandella and Ryan Suter. Devan Dubnyk started all four games in net for Minnesota, but was relieved by backup Darcy Kuemper on two occasions. Dubnyk posted a 1-4-0 record with a 4.60 goals against average and an .881 save percentage while Kuemper faced 29 shots over limited time and stopped all 29.

The ’85-’86 Whalers have now appeared in all three UNP’s as the franchises representative and this is the second straight tournament that they have advanced from the First Round. In the Second Round, the Whalers will face the 9th-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings, who are an UNP regular. The ’14-’15 Wild were making their UNP debut and fail to make it out of the First Round. This is the second tournament in a row that the Wild’s representative has not advanced to the Second Round.

Next up in the First Round, the 17th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames face the 48th-seeded ’30-’31 Philadelphia Quakers!
