The final matchup of the First Round of the Third Annual Ultimate NHL Playoff featue plenty of offense. The 27th-seeded ’99-’00 Florida Panthers outscored the 38th-seeded ’75-’76 California Golden Seals 29-16 over the five games, but before an 8-0 decisive Game 5, they were only outscoring them by five through five games.

The Russian Rocket, Pavel Bure, was Florida’s top scorer with 15 points over the five games, much of them coming bunches. He stormed out of the games with five points in Game 1 and then posted three in Game 2, one in Game 3, four in Game 4 and two in Game 5. Mike Sillinger and Viktor Kozlov were tied for second in scoring behind Bure with 11 points each. Bure was also the team’s top goal-scorer with seven goals while Kozlov was second with five. Overall, 10 different players scored in the series for the Panthers. Bure and Sillinger were tied for the team’s lead in assists with eight helpers apiece while Kozlov was alone in second with six. They got plenty of offensive help from the blue line with Robert Svehla and Jaroslav Spacek both averaging more than a point per game. In goal, Mike Vernon posted a 4-1-0 record with a 3.20 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. He finished off the series with his best performance, a 40-save shutout performance in Game 5.

The Golden Seals had their moments offensively and showed plenty of depth. 12 different players registered a point, more than the Panthers. Al MacAdam and Wayne Merrick were tied for the team lead in scoring with six points apiece. Dave Hrechkosy and Bob Murdoch were tied for second with five points apiece. Five of MacAdams’s six points were goals, to lead Cali, while Murdoch was tied for second with three with Bob Girard. Meanwhile, five of Merrick’s six points were assists, also a team-high. Hrechkosy was tied for second in helpers at three with defenseman Bob Stewart. Those three assists also had Stewart as the team’s top point producer on the blue line. Starting goaltender Gilles Meloche had his problems in this series. He posted a dismal .847 save percentage to go along with his 1-4-0 record and 4.80 goals against average. He was pulled from three of the games for backup Gary Simmons, who fair better than him. He allowed six goals over his three appearances and posted a .952 save percentage.

The ’99-’00 Panthers were a surprise representative in the Second Annual UNP last year, but were able to make it to the Third Round. Now, they’re back for the second time, but they’ll have almost a zero percent chance of making it back to the Third Round because waiting for them in the Second Round are the 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Edmonton Oilers, the third different dynasty team to represent the franchise so far. The ’75-’76 Golden Seals were making their return to the UNP after missing out on last year’s tournament. However, they continue to search for their first UNP series win.

This concludes the First Round of the Third Annual Ultimate NHL Playoff! Up next will be a round recap post and a couple posts of the team/skater/goalie stat leaders after the opening round! Then….the Second Round begins!
