Kane and Keith Lead the Way as 5th-seeded ’12-’13 Blackhawks Defeat 28th-seeded ’72-’73 North Stars

Special teams was a huge factor in this series and it was heavy in the 5th-seeded ’12-’13 Chicago Blackhawks’ favor. They were only shorthanded four times during the five games and did not allow a PPG. However, they went 5-for-12 (41.7%) on their own PP, which really sunk the 28th-seeded ’72-’73 Minnesota North Stars, as if Chicago needed any help.

Defenseman Duncan Keith led Chicago in scoring up until Game 5 when Patrick Kane factored into all five of their goals to finish with 10 points to lead the way. Keith finished with nine points to finish second ahead of Captain Jonathan Toews in third with just six points. Those three were also the leaders in goal scoring for the Hawks. Kane scored five to lead the way while Keith and Toews were tied for second with four goals apiece. Kane and Keith were also tied for the team lead in helpers with five assists each and Bryan Bickell was second in assists with four, naturally. Goaltender Corey Crawford was a little busier than I would’ve expected, as he saw over 30 shots on goal per game.  He couldn’t have asked for a better start to the series as he posted a 23-save shutout in Chicago’s 7-0 win in Game 1. He finished with a 4-1-0 record to go with a 2.20 goals against average and a .929 save percentage.

Dennis Hextall led the way offensively for Minnesota with six points over the five games. However, four of those points came in the North Stars’ double overtime loss in Game 3. Defenseman Barry Gibbs was right behind him in second with five points in the series. Hextall was also tied for the team lead in goals with three goals. He was tied with fellow forward Danny Grant and Murray Oliver. They were the only three North Stars to score more than once in the series. Gibbs was the team’s top playmaker with a team-high five helpers with J.P. Parise a close second with four. Goaltender Cesare Maniago was a man among boys in the opening round, but he faced a beast in the Second Round here and his numbers suffered because of it. He posted a 1-3-1 record with a 4.00 goals against average and a .900 save percentage.

For Chicago, it’s been a tale of two tournaments. In the inaugural UNP, the ’12-’13 Blackhawks made a run to the Quarterfinal, but last year, the Hawks’ representative was one-and-done in the Second Round. Now, the ’12-’13 Blackhawks are back and are looking to put Chicago back in the UNP elite. Minnesota’s original franchise has been able to make it to the Second Round in all three tournaments and the ’72-’73 North Stars are the third different team to have done that. However, they continue to look for their first Third Round appearance.

Up next in the Second Round, the 10th-seeded ’19-’20 Ottawa Senators face the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres!
