The 14th-seeded ’29-’30 Montreal Maroons put up a fight early on in this series, but the 19th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were just too much to handle in the end. The Mighty Ducks outscored the Maroons 15-4 over the final two games of the series to close it out.

Hooley Smith and Dave Trottier were tied for the lead in scoring for Montreal at six points each while there was a three-way tie for second with four points between Nels Stewart and defensemen Red Dutton and Dunc Munro. Smith was also the Maroons’ leading goal scorer with four while Stewart was second with three. In Montreal’s lone win in the series, Stewart scored the game-winner just 37 seconds into  overtime of Game 1. Archie Wilcox was the only other player for Montreal to score more than once with his two goals over the five goals. Trottier was the team’s best playmaker with five helpers during the series. Dutton and Munro were tied for second behind Trottier with four assists each. Flat Walsh was the starting goaltender for the Maroons in this series, but he was pulled three times during the series for backup Clint Benedict. Walsh finished the series with a 1-4-0 record to go along with a 4.20 goals against average and a .886 save percentage while, in his limited time, Benedict posted a .911 save percentage while allowing five goals.

The offense ramped up for Anaheim as the series went on as they never scored fewer goals than they did in their previous game of the series. Andy McDonald led the way with 14 points over the five games while defenseman Scott Niedermayer was second with 12 points. Teemu Selanne was the third and final member of the Mighty Ducks to finish in double digits in points with 11. McDonald was also the team’s leading goal-scorer with seven geno’s while the Finnish Flash was second with four. (S.) Niedermayer, the captain of the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks was tied with the current Ducks captain, Ryan Getzlaf, for third in goals with three. However, Scottie was the team’s leader in assists with nine while, of course, McDonald and Selanne were tied for second with seven assists each. Jean-Sebastien Giguere was his good for Anaheim in this series, not his best, but good. He went 4-0-1 with a 2.60 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.

The ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks are making their second consecutive appearance in the UNP and have already outdone what they did last year where they were eliminated in the Second Round. They still have to win another series to tie the franchise mark of reaching the Quarterfinal that was set in the inaugural tournament. They’ll have a decent shot at that as they will face the 30th-seeded ’85-’86 Hartford Whalers in the Third Round after they upset the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings earlier in the Second Round. The ’29-’30 Maroons were making their UNP debut after the same team represented the franchise in the first two tourneys. The franchise has only been able to make it out and of the Second Round now once, which happened last year.

Up next in the Second Round, the 2nd-seeded ’47-’48 Toronto Maple Leafs face the 31st-seeded ’06-’07 Nashville Predators!
