29th-seeded ’11-’12 Coyotes Pull Off Upset of 4th-seeded ’70-’71 Bruins Despite Disparity in Chances

The 4th-seeded ’70-’71 Boston Bruins outshot the 29th-seeded ’11-’12 Phoenix Coyotes by 89 over the six games, which averages out to about 15 shots per game. However, the ’11-’12 Coyotes were able to edge out the ’70-’71 Bruins in goal scoring by two to complete the major upset.

10 different Bruins scored during the series, but only four of those player scored more than once. Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield, all three forwards on their top line, were tied for the team lead in goals with four each. Center Derek Sanderson was second with three and was the only other player to score more than once for Boston. Defenseman Bobby Orr led them in helpers with five while Esposito was tied for second with four along with John Buyck and defenseman Dallas Smith. Espo finished the series atop their overall scoring leaderboard with eight points while Hodge was right behind him in second with seven points. Goaltending held Boston back in this series. Gerry Cheevers was their starter and played every minute of the series, but did not play well. He posted a 2-3-1 record to go along with a 3.83 goals against average and a very poor .877 save percentage. If Cheevers could have played above .900 save percentage hockey in net, maybe Boston would not be one-and-done here.

In traditional Coyotes fashion, it was offense by committee during this series. Radim Vrbata and Ray Whitney were tied for the team lead in goal scoring with five genos apiece while defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson was second with three. Whitney was also tied for the team lead in helpers at five with Martin Hanzal. Kyle Turris tallied four assists to finish tied for second with Vrbata. Naturally, Whitney and Vrbata finished first and second in overall scoring for the Yotes, with 10 and nine points, respectively. Hanzal was a fairly distant third, relatively, with six points. Goaltender Mike Smith played a big part in Phoenix’s upset here, along with the defense in front of him. As I said earlier, the Yotes were almost constantly being outshot. He posted a 4-2-0 record to go along with a 3.50 goals against average and a .920 save percentage, the save percentage should stand out since his counterpart’s SV% was only .877%.

The ’11-’12 Coyotes have appeared in all three Ultimate NHL Playoffs so far. This was the tournament where they won their first series and now after this upset, they are one more series win away from the Quarterfinal. The ’70-’71 Bruins were making their first appearance in the UNP after a reordering of the Qualification seeds left the ’73-’74 Bruins, who represented the franchise in both of the first two UNPS, out of the picture. After a run to the Semifinal in the inaugural tournament, the Bruin franchise has now been eliminated in the Third Round last year and the Second Round this year.

Up next in the Second Round, the 7th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers face the 26th-seeded ’05-’06 Ottawa Senators
