Vachon and Defense, As Usual, Lead the Way as 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Kings Sweep of 20th-seeded ’08-’09 Hurricanes

The 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings are up to their old tricks. In last year’s tournament, they led the tournament in both goals allowed per game and shots allowed per game. They’re headed for that again, as they allowed just 1.25 goals and 24.8 shots in the sweep.

They accomplished this while not scoring much themselves, again. They averaged 3.75 goals per game while putting 47 shots on goal on average. Only three players scored more than once for Los Angeles over the four games. Bob Nevin led the way with four goals while Don Kozak was second with three while Mike Murphy was the third with just two goals. Meanwhile, Dan Maloney was the Kings’ top playmaker with four assists over the course of the four games while defenseman Terry Harper was alone in second with three. There was a six-way tie for third in assists with two, which included Dozak and Murphy. Recent Hall of Fame inductee, Rogie Vachon, is also on his own way towards a run for the UNP Vezina trophy, which he barely lost out on last year. He posted a 4-0-0 record with a 1.25 goals against average and a .949 save percentage. He closed off the series with a 21-save shutout in Los Angeles’ 6-0 win in Game 4.

At least, for Carolina, this was a close series until that Game 4 debauchery. The ’08-’09 Canes scored just five times in the series and three of those came from Tuomo Ruutu. The only other goal scorers were Chad LaRose and Ray Whitney. Seven different players registered at least one assist in the series for Carolina while Eric Staal led the way with three. The only other player to tally more than one assist was defenseman Joni Pitkanen who had two during the series. A total of 10 different Hurricanes finished the series with a point. Ruutu and Staal were tied for the team lead with three points while Pitkanen was alone in second with two points. In goal, Cam Ward had a pretty darn good series, up until Game 4. Up until Game 4, Ward had a .944 save percentage, but after allowing five goals in Game 4, that dropped to .923 save percentage. He finished the with a 0-3-1 record and a 3.50 goals against average to go with that save percentage.

The ’74-’75 Kings are in their second straight Ultimate NHL Playoff and are looking to match their run to the Quarterfinal last year, which set the franchise record. In the Third Round, they caught a bit of the break, as they will be facing the 29th-seeded ’11-’12 Phoenix Coyotes, who upset the 4th-seeded ’70-’71 Boston Bruins earlier this round. The ’08-’09 Hurricanes are the third different team to represent Carolina and all three have now advanced from the First Round only to be eliminated in the Second Round.

Up next in the Second Round, the top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens face the 32nd ’84-’85 Winnipeg Jets!
