McDonald and Selanne Combine for 29 Points as 19th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks Defeat 30th-seeded ’85-’86 Whalers in Six Games

The 30th-seeded ’85-’86 Hartford Whalers opened up a 2-1 series lead, but a blowout victory in Game 4 for the 19th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks led them to complete the comeback and win the series in six games.

As the title suggests, the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks kind of became a two-man show in this series. Andy McDonald and Teemu Selanne wee first and second on Anaheim in scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Two other Mighty Ducks finished the series averaging at least a point per game as defenseman Scott Niedermayer finished with nine points and Chris Kunitz finished with six points. However, it was Selanne who had the edge on McDonald in goal scoring with his eight to McDonald’s five, but he did have the edge on Selanne in helpers with 10 to Selanne’s six. However, Selanne actually wasn’t second in assists as he was outdone by Captain Scotty who tallied seven assists during the series. In goal, it wasn’t a prototypical display from Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Despite his 4-1-1 record, he posted a 3.17 goals against average and a .914 save percentage, both were subpar numbers for him, especially in the Ultimate NHL Playoff.

It was a much more balanced offensive attack for the Whalers. Ron Francis was their overall scoring leader with seven points, but then there was a three-way tie for second at six points between John Anderson, Ray Ferraro and Sylvain Turgeon. There was also a five-way tie for the team lead in goals with three goals that included Anderson, Ferraro, Francis and Turgeon, but also Stew Gavin. They were the only Whalers to actually score more than once. Defenseman Joel Quenneville ended up being Hartford’s top playmaker with five assists during the six games. Francis was tied with Kevin Dineen for second with four helpers each. Goaltender Mike Liut was really good early on in this series, but after Game 3, the Mighty Ducks’ offense started to overwhelm him. So Liut finished the series with a 2-3-1 record to go along with a 3.50 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.

In their second straight Ultimate NHL Playoff appearance, the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks already set their personal best mark by reaching the Third Round here. They have now tied the franchise mark by reaching the Quarterfinal, which was set in the inaugural UNP. They will either face the dynastic 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Edmonton Oilers or the 22nd-seeded ’09-’10 Vancouver Canucks. The ’85-’86 Whalers have appeared in all three UNP’s now and have done incrementally better in each tournament. In the inaugural tourney, they were one and done. Then, last year, they made it to the Second Round before being eliminated and this year they made it to the Third Round before being eliminated here today.

Up next in the Third Round, the 5th-seeded ’12-’13 Chicago Blackhawks face the 12th-seeded ’84-’85 Philadelphia Flyers
