Sinisalo’s Game 7 Overtime Winner Sees 12th-seeded ’84-’85 Flyers Over 5th-seeded ’12-’13 Blackhawks

The 5th-seeded ’12-’13 Chicago Blackhawks were always on the front foot in this series as they held 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 series leads. However, the 12th-seeded ’84-’85 Philadelphia Flyers showed the fighting spirit to keep rallying back before eventually taking the series in Game 7 overtime.

To no surprise, it was Patrick Kane who led the offensive attack for Chicago. He totaled 10 points during the series while Jonathan Toews was a close second with nine points. They were the only two Blackhawks to average at least a point per game. Those two were also the top two goal scorers for Chicago with five goals from Kane and four goals from Toews. Marian Hossa was right behind them in third with three goals. There was a three-way tie for the team lead in assists between Kane, Toews and defenseman Duncan Keith at five. Right behind them in second with four assists was Bryan Bickell. Goaltender Corey Crawford had a series that was pretty close to his average UNP numbers. He posted a 3-2-2 record to go along with a 2.86 goals against average with a .912 save percentage.

Atop the overall scoring leaderboard for the Flyers was a defenseman, but not the one you might expect from the ’84-’85 Flyers. Brad McCrimmon finished with a team-high 10 points during the series with Tim Kerr and Brian Propp behind him in second and third with eight and seven points, respectively. A defenseman also led Philadelphia in goals, but not the one you might expect. Brad Marsh of all people led the Flyers in goals with four during the series while Kerr was tied with series hero Ilkka Sinisalo in second at three goals. A very balanced offensive attack from Philly in this series after Kerr and Propp carried the load last round. McCrimmon tallied eight helpers in the series to also lead Philadelphia in assists while Kerr and Propp were tied for second with five assists each. Goaltender Pelle Lindbergh was much better this round after a very subpar performance last round. He gave the Flyers a chance in games they may not have been up to the task and did pitch a 34-save shutout performance in Game 6 to force Game 7. He finished the series with a 4-3-0 record to go along with a 2.86 goals against average and a .921 save percentage.

In their first Ultimate NHL Playoff appearance, the ’84-’85 Flyers are well on their way towards tying the franchises best run in the UNP. The franchises representative last year made an impressive run to the Semifinal and the ’84-’85 Flyers are now one more win away from matching that. In the Quarterfinal, they will face either the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings or the 29th-seeded ’11-’12 Phoenix Coyotes. The ’12-’13 Blackhawks were making their return to the UNP after missing out on the tournament last year, but were unable to match their performance in the inaugural UNP. They reached the Quarterfinal in that tournament, which now remains as the franchises best run in the UNP.

Up next in the Third Round, the 7th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers face the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres!
