Hadfield Leads 7th-seeded ’71-’72 Rangers as They Get Revenge On 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Sabres

Last year, the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres upset their instate rivals, the 7th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers, in the Third Round. This year, the ’71-’72 Rangers returned the favor and have knocked out the ’79-’80 Sabres in the Third Round, which is now their earliest exit in Ultimate NHL Playoff history.

The Rangers certainly can match the fabled top line of the Sabres with their own top line, the Goal-A-Game Line. Led by Vic Hadfield in this series with eight points, his linemates, Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert were right behind him in overall scoring with seven and six points, respectively. Where Hadfield really shined in this series was in Buffalo’s net as he posted a series-high seven goals during the six games. Ratelle was a distant second with three goals while Bruce MacGregor was the only other Ranger with more than one goal in the series with two geno’s. Gilbert finished as New York’s top playmaker with five helpers during the series while Ratelle was tied for second with four alongside defenseman Brad Park. Certainly makes sense for Gilbert and Ratelle to be atop that category with their linemate scoring the most goals in the series. Goaltender Ed Giacomin, despite a five-game victory last round, didn’t play particularly well. He rebounded in this series with a much better performance. He posted a 4-2-0 record to go along with a 2.67 goals against average and a .914 save percentage. He also posted a 26-save shutout performance in Game 5.

This Sabres team has always lit it up offensively in the UNP and the Rangers were able to slow them down here in these six games. It was the usual names atop Buffalo’s scoring leaderboard, but the numbers were smaller. On a team that routinely has players posting over 10 points in a series, Rick Martin led Buffalo with just nine during these six games against the Rangers. Gilbert Perreault was right behind him with eight points while their linemate Danny Gare was third with six. Perreault finished as the Sabres’ top goal scorer with six while Martin was second with three. Meanwhile, defenseman John Van Boxmeer with two goals was the only other player for Buffalo to score more than once in the series. However, Martin did finish with the most assists at six for the Sabres as Gare and defenseman Jim Schoenfeld were tied for second with five assists. In goal, Don Edwards, much like Giacomin, hasn’t been at his best at times during this tournament, but for Edwards he was neither good nor bad in this series. He posted a 2-3-1 record to go along with a 2.83 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.

The ’71-’72 Rangers are in their third straight Ultimate NHL Playoff and have now reached the Quarterfinal for the second time. Last year, they missed out after being eliminated by these ’79-’80 Sabres in this very round. In the Quarterfinal, the ’71-’72 Rangers will either face the 15th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche or the 31st-seeded ’06-’07 Nashville Predators. The ’79-’80 Sabres have now been eliminated before the Quarterfinal for the first time in UNP history. In their third tournament, the ’79-’80 Sabres have reached the Quarterfinal in both of the first two tournaments and to the Semifinal once.

Up next in the Third Round, the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings face the 29th-seeded ’11-’12 Phoenix Coyotes!
