It was a tight five-game series between two teams that are right next to each other in the Ultimate NHL Playoff standings. Four of the five games were decided by one goal, and the one game in the series that wasn’t decided by one goal was decided by two goals.

It was offense-by-committee for the 24th-seeded ’84-’85 Washington Capitals in these five games. Defenseman Scott Stevens led in scoring with six points while there was a three-way tie for second at five points between Gaetan Duchesne, Mike Gartner and defenseman Larry Murphy. All five of Gartner’s points were goals, which isn’t all that surprising. Dave Christian was second behind him in goals with three while Bob Carpenter was the only other Cap to score more than once with his two goals. All six of Stevens’ points were assists, so he also was Washington’s leader in helpers while all five of Murphy’s points were assists, making him second on the team. Goaltender Pat Riggin isn’t someone you would necessarily expect to have a huge impact on a series, but he really was not good for Washington here. He posted a 1-3-1 record to go along with a 3.60 goals against average and a very subpar .875 save percentage.

Almost all of the offense for the 25th-seeded ’09-’10 San Jose Sharks came from their top unit. Dany Heatley, Joe Thornton and defenseman Dan Boyle were all tied for the team lead in scoring with eight points. The third and final member of the top forward unit, Patrick Marleau, was alone in second with six points. No other Shark finished the series with more than just three points during the series. Heatley and Thornton were also tied for the team lead in goals with four apiece. Two of Heatley’s four goals turned out to be game-winner’s during the series. Manny Malhotra was alone in second in goal scoring with three goals while only two other Sharks scored more than once. Much his counterparts, all of Boyle’s eight points were assists, which were a team high. Meanwhile, Heatley, Marleau and Thornton were all tied for second in assists with four. In goal for San Jose, it was pretty much steady as it goes for Evgeni Nabokov. His numbers during this series are almost identical to his overall numbers throughout the tournament. He finished the series with a 4-1-0 record to go along with a 2.80 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.

The ’09-’10 Sharks have represented San Jose in all three Ultimate NHL Playoffs and have done incrementally better every year. In the inaugural UNP, they were out in the Second Round and then last year, they were out in the Third Round. Now, they’re a first-time Quarterfinalist, but they unfortunately will face the top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens, who are looking to win their second UNP championship and defeated the 16th-seeded ’02-’03 Dallas Stars in five games earlier in the round. In their first appearance in the UNP, the ’84-’85 Capitals have fallen just one round short of tying the franchise best of making it to the Quarterfinal. That, of course, was set last year where they were eliminated by the eventual champions.

Up next in the Third Round, the 15th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche face the 31st-seeded ’06-’07 Nashville Predators!
