The 7th-seeded ’71-’72 Rangers outshot the 15th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche three times during the series and all three by 10 or more shots, including outshooting the Avs by 29 in Game 1. However, the Rangers did not win any of those three games and that played a large part in their quick defeat by Colorado.

New York also averaged about 10 more shots on goal than Colorado in the series, but was outscored 19-16 over the course of the five games. There was a three-way tie for the team lead in goal-scoring at three between Vic Hadfield, Jean Ratelle and defenseman Jim Neilson. Bobby Rousseau was the only other Ranger to score more than once with his two goals. Defenseman Brad Park finished as their top playmaker with four assists while Hadfield was right behind him in second with three. Meanwhile there was about a 10-way tie for third with two assists. Atop the Rangers’ overall scoring leaderboard was Hadfield with six points and Neilson with five points. Defense and goaltending turned out to be an issue for the Rangers in this series, which has been the opposite from their performance in this tournament. Ed Giacomin finished the series with a 1-3-1 record to go along with a 4.20 goals against average and a .867 save percentage.

As the title suggests, it turned into a three-man show for the Avalanche in this series. Peter Forsberg, Claude Lemieux and Joe Sakic all scored five times, which was a tie for the team lead. They were actually the only Avs to score more than once in the series. There were only six other players to score for Colorado in the series, all just once, including Martin Rucinsky and defenseman Adam Deadmarsh, Sylvain Lefebvre and Sandis Ozolinsh. There was also a four-way tie for the team lead in helpers. Valeri Kamensky, Andrei Kovalenko, Mike Ricci and Lemieux all registered four assists for Colorado while Ozolinsh, Rucinsky and Sakic were all tied for second with three assists. Naturally, the overall scoring leaders for Colorado were Lemieux, Sakic and Forsberg with nine, eight and seven points, respectively. Goaltender Patrick Roy hasn’t exactly been a star for Colorado in this tournament. However, he was huge at times during this series, specifically in the games where the Avalanche were outshot by 10 or more goals, but still won. He finished this series with a 3-1-0 record, with backup Stephane Fiset recording a win in his one relief appearance, to go along with a 3.20 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

The ’95-’96 Avs have now booked their first trip to the Ultimate NHL Playoff Semifinal and the second overall trip to the Semifinal for the franchise. They will seek their first trip to the UNP Final when they face either the 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Edmonton Oilers or the 19th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.  The ’71-’72 Rangers are in their third UNP and were looking for their first trip to the Semifinal. However, they were unable to accomplish that and instead have been eliminated for the second time in the Quarterfinal Round.

Up next in the Quarterfinal, the top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens face the 25th-seeded ’09-’10 San Jose Sharks!
