Gretzky Dominates as 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Oilers Sweep 19th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks in High-Scoring Series

This might have been the highest-scoring sweep in Ultimate NHL Playoff history. The 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Edmonton Oilers and the 19th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim combined for 41 goals, which is, obviously, a little over 10 combined goals per game. This also means this was not a good series for the goaltenders, which I’ll get into a little later.

How much did Wayne Gretzky dominate? He finished with 18 points….in the four games. Those 18 points were a team-high. Coming in tied for second in overall scoring were Gretzky’s linemates, Glenn Anderson and Mark Messier, who were tied with 11 points. Two other Oilers did average at least a point per game with Jari Kurri totaling six points and defenseman Paul Coffey totaling five points. Gretzky also was Edmonton’s leading goal-scorer with eight while Anderson and Kurri were tied for second with four goals apiece. Coffey and Messier were the only other Oilers to score more than once with two and three goals, respectively. Naturally, Gretzky also led the team in helpers with 10 while Messier and Anderson were second and third with eight and seven assists, respectively. Like I previously said, this was not a good series for the goaltenders. Andy Moog posted his worst series of the tournament with a 4.00 goals against average and a .897 save percentage to go along with his 4-0-0 record.

It was a tough task for the Mighty Ducks, but offensively they still were able to put up good numbers. Although, the depth kind of disappeared as the top line guys really were the only ones to provide much. Teemu Selanne led the way overall with 10 points while defenseman Scott Niedermayer was second with nine points. Two other Mighty Ducks finished the series averaging at least a point per game as Andy McDonald finished with seven points and Ryan Getzlaf finished with four points. Selanne was also Anaheim’s leading goal-scorer with seven geno’s. Only two other players finished with more than one goal as Getzlaf scored three times and McDonald scored two times. Captain Scotty finished as Anaheim’s top playmaker with eight assists while McDonald was second with five helpers. Now the bad part. Jean-Sebastien Giguere had a brutal time in this series. He was pulled for the first time in the tournament, giving backup Ilya Bryzgalov his first UNP appearance. Giguere finished with an 0-4-0 record with a 6.00 goals against average and a .855 save percentage.

The ’82-’83 Oilers are the third different team to represent Edmonton in the Ultimate NHL Playoff. All three have reached the Quarterfinal and this is now the second year in a row that the Oilers representative has gone through to the Semifinal. In this year’s Semifinal, they will actually have a rematch in terms of franchise as they face off against Colorado, again. However, this year they will face the 15th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche. The ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks are in their second consecutive UNP appearance, but had a quick exit last year in the Second Round. This year, they have tied the franchise best by making it to the Quarterfinal here, which was originally set in the inaugural UNP.

Up next, to finish the Quarterfinal, the 12th-seeded ’84-’85 Philadelphia Flyers face the 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings
