Propp’s Late Goal in Game 7 Leads 12th-seeded ’84-’85 Flyers Over 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Kings

The 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings were their usual stingy, defense selves and they held 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 series leads, but the 12th-seeded ’84-’85 Philadelphia Flyers’ resilience won in the end. Los Angeles out-scored Philadelphia 20-17 over the course of the seven games and outshot them, on average, by almost 10 shots per game. But that wasn’t enough to get it done.

Brian Propp not only scored the series-clinching goal in the final minutes of Game 7, but was also the Flyers’ leading scorer with nine points. Defenseman Mark Howe stepped up his offense in this series with eight points, all assists, to finish second behind Propp, whose linemates, Tim Kerr and Dave Poulin, both finished tied for third in scoring with six points each. Six different players were responsible for Philadelphia’s 17 goals during the series. Six of those goals came from Propp and four came from Kerr. Howe’s eight assists were a team-high for the Flyers while, surprisingly, defenseman Ed Hospodar was second behind Howe with four helpers during the series. Goaltender Pelle Lindbergh did not get much help from his offense, in terms of goal support and overall offense, but was his steady self in net. He was pulled once in this series for backup Bob Froese, but Pelle was solid. He finished with a 4-2-1 record to go along with a 2.86 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.

It was a decent offensive performance from Los Angeles in this series, but they still only averaged under three goals a game. Just goes to show how they’ve always won with defense and goaltending. Dan Maloney led the way for Los Angeles offensively with eight points while Butch Goring and defenseman Bob Murdoch were tied for second with seven points. Bob Nevin was the Kings’ leading goal scorer with four and Mike Murphy was right behind him in second with three goals. There was a smattering of other Kings who scored twice. Maloney and Murdoch were tied for the team lead in helpers at six while Goring was alone in second with five of his own. Now Hall of Famer, Rogie Vachon, has been a stalwart for the ’74-’75 Kings in both of their UNP tournaments. However, this was his worst series in the two years with a save percentage that was well below his UNP average. He posted a 3-3-1 record to go along with a 2.43 goals against average and a .907 save percentage. However, he did register a 22-save shutout performance in the opening game of the series, a 4-0 win for the Kings.

The ’84-’85 Flyers are the third different team to represent Philadelphia in the Ultimate NHL Playoff. After a disappointing one-and-done in the inaugural tournament, the past two years now the franchises representative has made it through to the Semifinal. However, both times now Philadelphia has unfortunately run into the top seed in Montreal. Much like Philly, the Kings’ representative was one-and-done in the inaugural UNP and now the franchises representative has reached the Quarterfinal in the last two tournaments. Of course, the ’74-’75 Kings were the representative for Los Angeles who have made it to the Quarterfinal twice, but again, not able to get by the Flyers.

This concludes the Quarterfinal Round of the Third Annual Ultimate NHL Playoff! Up next will be a round recap post and a couple posts of the team/skater/goalie stat leaders after the opening round! Then….the Semifinal begins!
