This was not a very exciting round. There were four series’, two of which were four-game sweeps. One game went only five games. The fourth and final series did go seven games, though, and turned out to be a pretty darn good series. The 13th-seeded ’74-’75 Los Angeles Kings held 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 series leads, but they fell in seven games to the 12th-seeded ’84-’85 Philadelphia Flyers.Philadelphia avoided going down 3-1 in the series with a huge overtime win in Game 4. This is now the second straight year that the ’74-’75 Kings have been eliminated by the Flyers’ representative in the Quarterfinal Round. The 7th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers fell a bit flat in their second appearance in the Quarterfinal Round as they were dropped in five games by the 15th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche, who have reached the Semifinal Round for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, the two franchises that squared off in the Ultimate NHL Playoff Final last year both swept their opponents to reach the Semifinal as the top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens swept the 25th-seeded ’09-’10 San Jose Sharks and the 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Edmonton Oilers swept the 19th-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
