This was not much of a competition early on. The top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens finished the first period with a 20-6 shot advantage over the 12th-seeded ’95-’96 Philadelphia Flyers. Bob Gainey started the scoring with his fourth goal of the tournament at the 9:26 mark of the opening frame. Then, about three and a half minutes later, defenseman Guy Lapointe made it 2-0 with his eighth of the tournament. Murray Wilson made it a 3-0 lead just 30 seconds later, but Philadelphia did get one back before the end of the period with Dave Poulin scoring his 10th of the tournament. However, the Canadiens would add three more unanswered goals in the second period.

Doug Risebrough potted his second of the tournament exactly halfway through regulation to give Montreal a 4-1 lead. Just 17 seconds later, Yvon Lambert made it a 5-1 game with his fourth, and with that goal the Flyers decided to pull starting goalie Pelle Lindbergh for backup Bob Froese. Pelle allowed five goals on 27 shots against in the game. The Habs added yet another goal to make it 6-1 with defenseman Larry Robinson‘s third with a little over four minutes left in the second period. The Flyers got a garbage time goal late in the third period from Ilkka Sinisalo, his eighth, on the only PP opportunity in the game. The game ended at a 6-2 final with Montreal outshooting Philadelphia 47-24.
