This game was over in the first period. The game started with an ejection just two and a half minutes in. Chris Simon was given a five-minute major for checking from behind and a 10-minute game misconduct. This was Simon’s third ejection of the tournament. The scoring for the 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Edmonton Oilers started on the corresponding powerplay. Charlie Huddy scored first and then Mark Messier responded 32 seconds after that and at the conclusion of the five-minute PP, the Oilers led 2-0. Glenn Anderson then scored two goals in a matter of three minutes in the middle of the opening period with both primary assists coming from Wayne Gretzky. At the 12:32 mark, Jari Kurri scored his eighth to give Edmonton a 5-0 lead, which would be the end of Patrick Roy‘s night as Colorado pulled him for Stephane Fiset.

The Oilers potted two more goals before the end of the period, a second of the night for Kurri and Pat Hughes‘ third of the tournament. 7-0 after one period of play. The scoring for Edmonton continued in the middle of the second period when Gretzky capped off his four-point night with his 20th goal of the tournament, this one coming unassisted and off his own rebound. The Avalanche finally got on the board in the final minute of the second period when Peter Forsberg scored his 12th. They then got another garbage time goal at the 12:20 mark of the third courtesy of Claude Lemieux and his 14th of the tournament. That would finish off the scoring with an 8-2 final, but with Edmonton only outshooting Colorado 39-38.
