The 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Edmonton Oilers were able to score very early on in Game 3 here and looked like maybe this could be another early offensive onslaught for the powerful Oilers. However, that was not to be the case. Wayne Gretzky potted his 21st of the tournament just 1:07 into the game, but that 1-0 lead would only last until the very end of the period. With just four seconds remaining in the opening frame, Joe Sakic tied the game for the 15th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche with his 14th of the tournament. The second period finished scoreless and even at shots with 15 apiece.

The third period saw both teams improve on there 15 shot markers from the second period. Edmonton began the third period scoring with Ken Linseman‘s fifth goal of the tournament at the 7:52 mark. Then, with a little over four minutes left in regulation, Adam Deadmarsh tied it at four for Colorado with just his second geno of the tourney. Then, in the final minute of regulation, Martin Rucinsky broke the deadlock with his eighth goal of the tournament. Rucinsky’s goal held up in the final seconds to get Colorado on the board in the series. Colorado’s Patrick Roy, after putting up a sub-.800 save percentage in the first two games of this series, finally played up to his ability with a 45 save performance.
