The 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Edmonton Oilers have really applied the pressure to the 15th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche in this series. However, that was not the case here in Game 4. The Oilers did get the jump on the Avs on the scoreboard, though. Defenseman Kevin Lowe scored a little over three minutes into the game with his third of the tournament to give Edmonton an early 1-0 lead. The Oilers were only able to get six shots on goal in the opening frame, by far a series-low. They added to their lead despite that just 40 seconds into the second period when Jaroslav Pouzar scored his fifth. Wayne Gretzky registered the primary assist on both of those goals, his 31st and 32nd assists in the tournament.

The Avalanche broke Andy Moog‘s goose egg with defenseman Curtis Leschyshyn‘s third goal of the tournament with just over four minutes remaining in the second period. Captain Joe Sakic tied it quickly in the third period with his team-leading 15th goal of the tournament. Shortly past the halfway point of the third period, Valeri Kamensky potted his sixth of the tournament to give Colorado their first lead of the game. At the 16:50 mark of the third period, the Avalanche were given a chance to get an insurance marker when defenseman Lee Fogolin Jr. was given a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. However, Sakic was called for high-sticking at the 18:17 mark, ending Colorado’s PP and after a short stint of 4-on-4, the Oilers would have their own PP. Patrick Roy and the Avalanche penalty killers stood tall, though, and they held on for the 3-2 win. The Oilers were held to only 26 shots on goal. Both Claude Lemieux and defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh pitched in offensively with a pair of assists each.
