The 6th-seeded ’82-’83 Edmonton Oilers took an early lead just three and a half minutes into Game 6 when Wayne Gretzky, unassisted, scored his 23rd of the tournament. Then, with three plus minutes remaining in the opening period, Gretzky potted his second of the game to give Edmonton a 2-0 lead. Just 14 seconds later, the 15th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche found themselves down a man when captain Joe Sakic was given a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Avalanche were able to stave off the Edmonton PP and then eight seconds after the penalty expired, Peter Forsberg got Colorado on the board with his 13th. Due to coincidental minors late in the opening period, 4-on-4 play carried over into the beginning of the second period.

The Avalanche capitalized on the opportunity with Martin Rucinsky‘s ninth goal of the tournament, with Foppa registering the primary assist for his second point of the game. However, the tie did not last until the end of the period. Glenn Anderson scored his 18th for Edmonton at the 15:19 mark to reinstate an Oilers lead. With 10 seconds left in the second, Ken Linseman was called for charging and the Avs found themselves on a PP that carried over into the start of the third period. Foppa scored on said PP just over a minute into the third period to tie the game back up. Regulation ended with a 3-3 score line and the Avalanche holding a narrow 34-33 lead in shots on goal. Now in a score or go home situation, Colorado had to score. It didn’t take long for them to do so. Defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh scored just 59 seconds into the overtime period to force a series-deciding seventh game.
